& how you can do it too!
You don’t need to be a millionaire to explore the world. There are many many ways to work and travel at the same time. It’s a great opportunity to discover different places or stay somewhere for a longer time without returning broke. Here is a full list of how I have been working and traveling my way around the world for the last 4 years and how you can do it too!
This is my main stream of income. I work as a freelancer and manage the marketing and other social media for different brands and companies. I also make money with photography and graphic design. It’s something I love and I can choose where & when I work.
Do you have an online skill? Are you good at web developing, graphic design, translating,… If you are, you can sign up on freelance websites such as ‘Upwork’ or ‘Fiverr’. If you are not good at anything specific you can always become good! On the website ‘Udemy‘ you can follow heaps of online courses for free or very cheap.
2. Work on festivals around Europe
Stoke Travel is a company based in Barcelona that organizes trips to different festivals and events in Europe. Their deal is that you work in return for free food, alcohol and accommodation. You don’t only get that but you also get unforgettable memories and make friends for life. I did this and worked on all their festivals more than once. That is how fun it was! You can join Surf camps, Ibiza trips, Oktoberfest, Boat parties in Barcelona, the famous Tomato fight in Spain,… You also get a promo code which lets you earn commission if someone uses it. My promo code is ‘FARAHINTHESUN’so if you don’t want to work but just want to go on one of their trips you can add it to your booking it and get something for free or a discount ;). Yayyy!
3. Discover the world as a flight attendant
If you are not afraid of heights, stress resistant, min. 160 cm tall, good at languages and able to adapt to a changing routine than working as a flight attendant might be an option for you! I worked and traveled as a flight attendant for three summer seasons. It was an amazing experience and I have been to places I would otherwise never go. A good option if you want to get paid to stay in fancy hotels, meet a lot of people and earn some good cash.
4. Sell stock photos
There are websites where you can put up your photos and if someone uses it you get paid! What a great way to earn a passive income. There are many different ones out there such as ‘Stock Adobe’ or ‘istock photo’. Just type into google ‘sell stock photos online’ and you’ll find heaps of websites.
Become a blogger like me, woohoow! Make money or get free stuff by collaborating with different brands, advertising, affiliate links,… Before you start it’s best to do some research or an online course on how to grow a blog and make money from it. It’s not that easy. You need a lot of dedication, consistency and be passionate about it.
We have nothing to lose & a world to see!
6. Volunteer work in return for free food & accommodation.
Save sea turtles, live on a Scandinavian farm, play with kids in a local school or try many other cool jobs… It’s a great way to gain an amazing international experience. The best website is called ‘Workaway’. There are many options to different jobs around the world. On this site I found myself a job in Guatemala and Nicaragua. First I lived in a hostel in the jungle and then I was riding waves everyday while working in a surf shop!
7. Be an au pair and take care of kids
Live with a family and play with their kids. It’s the best way to really indulge in the local culture and learn the language. Downsides are that you don’t make much money and don’t have much freedom. It’s more in return for free food an accommodation. When I lived in Australia, I did this for the family of a famous person. (Sorry I can’t mention the name). I lived in their huge villa on the beach and could enjoy all the luxury while taking care for their adorable kids.
8. Do a surf or ski season
If you are good at surfing or snow sports you can become an instructor. If not, there are plenty of other jobs you can do like working at reception, cooking, be a photographer or work in a bar. I worked on a surf camp and helped out with surf lessons, organizing trips, cooking and photography. So much fun and you meet people from all over the world!
Crypto currencies are becoming popular! There are actually people making money by just daily trading stocks or crypto currencies online. Do you have some good financial skills? If not, you can learn it. It’s not that difficult! I am not trading daily but I have made some good money by just investing some money and wait. It’s a game so be careful what you do and never invest money that you can’t risk to lose.
10. Work in a hostel
When you want to travel and have no clue where or how to find a job you can always ask around for a job in hostels. They often have something to offer. I worked in a hostel in the jungle of Guatemala. It was super cool cause I lived in a tree house and felt like Jane from Tarzan.
There is always a way and if there is no way find one!
As you see there are lots of options and there are so many more! Damnnn while writing this I realize that I have actually done a lot! Well, you know once you get the travel bug… you can’t stop. The people you meet and the experiences you gain are just amazing. I like to try out a bit of everything and then see what I like the most. If you want to work and travel in different corners of the world but don’t have much money to spend then I hope that this post inspires you. I often came back home with more money than I left and I am not gonna stop traveling soon!
