How to plan your best year ever!

A new year but also a new decade is right around the corner! A fresh start, new possibilities, new ideas and a burst of motivation. You are probably making lots of plans, writing resolutions, setting goals,… THIS YEAR IS GOING TO BE YOURS!

But along the way, there are challenges and obstacles to face. Resolutions usually last only a couple of weeks. We lose track or get carried away by distractions… The goals we set and the plans we envisioned for the New Year melt away together with the snow of these cold, dark winter days. Slowly, we settle back into our everyday routines and your exciting list of New Year plans gets lost somewhere in a dusty drawer.

But this year is going to be different! In this blog post, I’m going to share with you my strategies and best tips to ensure you don’t lose sight of your goals. Get ready to start planning, organising & tracking cause even though spontaneity is great… in order to take control and turn your dreams into reality, you need a strategy!

A DREAM written down with a date becomes a GOAL. A goal broken down into steps becomes a PLAN. A plan backed by ACTION becomes REALITY.

How to make sure your exciting new year's resolutions make it past January...

STEP 1: Create S.M.A.R.T. goals

First of all, I’m not a fan of resolutions as they are way too vague. You imagine you’d say: ‘I want to create a healthy lifestyle’. Okay, but what does that mean? What specific actions are you going to take to make it happen?

You need S.M.A.R.T. GOALS. This means Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

So instead of saying ‘ I want to create a healthy lifestyle’. You say: ‘ I am committed to do three gym workouts of min. 30 mins and two cardio workouts a week so that I can become fit and reach my ideal weight by June 1st.’

You see what I did there? You know exactly what to do, it’s specific and you know exactly if you will have reached your goal or not because you can measure it.

Use following example sentence to create your own goals: I am committed to > activity > frequency > so that I can…. (ideal outcome) > by, specific dates.

STEP 2: Your master plan.

Start with setting YEAR GOALS for every field of life. These is the only area I go less specific and use more keywords. You can write it down on a piece of paper or simply use a spreadsheet to do this.

SET (less specific) YEAR GOALS FOR ALL FIELDS OF LIFE:

  • HEALTH: …………………………………………………………………………………………
  • PERSONAL GROWTH: ……………………………………………………………..
  • FAMILY & FRIENDS: ……………………………………………………………………
  • LOVE: ………………………………………………………………………………………………..
  • FINANCIAL & CAREER: …………………………………………………………….
  • SPIRITUAL: ……………………………………………………………………………………..

Once you have set your year goals you can go more specific and set QUARTERLY GOALS. That means more specific goals for the upcoming 3 months. This is your time frame. Take a look at your year goals, prioritise and decide what you’re going to focus on first.

Make your quarterly goals S.M.A.R.T. (see tip 1). Write down every little task you need to do in order to achieve your goals. Decide the specific action steps and how long it will take you. Then turn those into to-do lists and set personal deadlines. I love using ‘ASANA’ to plan out my projects. It’s a free online tool.

Every three months analyse your progress, make new goals or adjust your already existing goals if necessary. Regularly reviewing your strategy and analysing your plan helps you to make adjustments along the way and stay on track.

STEP 3: Make a vision board to visualise your goals & dreams

It’s proven that visualising your dreams help you to achieve them. Put together a board with images that inspire you, places you want to go,… Make sure the images really reflect a feeling. Print your vision board, hang it up in a visible spot and look at it regularly.

You can use the ‘Jack Canfield vision board app’ or I personally love to use Pinterest. Have a look at my vision board and click the button below to follow me on Pinterest for daily inspiration!

STEP 4: Take it step by step

It’s impossible to quit smoking, become fit as an athlete, learn a new language, start a business, save money and travel the world at the same time…

Decide your priorities! It takes approximately 4 weeks of dedication to make or break a habit. So keep this in mind when you are making an effort to reach your goals. Try to focus on one or two goals at a time only. Once you feel like you get the hang of it you can add another goal to focus on. It takes time to transform and reach success.

It’s normal to give up sometimes but that does not mean that you quit! Adjust your goal, create new action steps and just start over again. Action creates motivation so don’t wait until you ‘feel like it’. Just do it and motivation will come!

STEP 5: Organise & declutter

A fresh start means leaving all the mess behind and getting rid of everything that’s unnecessary to keep things easy and simple. Don’t only clean up your house, your closet with clothes but also your laptop, make a back-up of all your files,…

To be able to focus on your projects you need to have peace of mind. Give everything a spot and make it as easy as possible for yourself to find things back.

2020 is yours!

Say goodbye to vague resolutions. It’s time for real results. If you follow the tips in this post you’ll get along way. Remember that it’s normal to give up sometimes and it takes practice to create new habits. You don’t have to wait for a New Year or Monday to start over again. You can start here and NOW!

You are the one who’s in control. Don’t let anyone or anything hold you back.

Good luck & a happy New Year!
