Ever since I was little, my dream was to go on big adventures and travel around the world. I’m from a little town near Antwerp in ‘Belgium’. The land of chocolate, beer, waffles and fries with mayonaise. I love Belgium but I always knew I belonged somewhere else.
We have to go to school, get a degree, find a job, build a house, get married, have kids and live happily ever after. But that just didn’t work for me… I felt stuck and wanted to discover what else was out there. Was I really meant to live here forever?
So when I was 20 years old, I saved up some money and a couple of days after I finally graduated from college, I put all my stuff in a backpack, booked a one way ticket and left to the other side of the world on my own. I had that burning feeling inside of me and nothing could stop me.
If you don’t go, you’ll never know…
I went the jungle in Guatemala and had no idea how long I would be away for, what I was gonna do, I did not know any people and the plan was not to have a plan. My friends and family called me crazy but all I wanted to do was to escape from my little home town, chase the sun, meet people and explore new places.
The big trip turned my whole life upside down and I started seeing the world from a whole other perspective. I realized that there are so many other ways to live your life and YES it is possible to do whatever you want and make your dreams come true!
After three months in Central-America, I traveled around Europe as a flight attendant, surfed in Asia, went to Africa, lived in Australia but I lost my heart to the city of Barcelona. I arrived with nothing but my backpack and it was a little struggle in the beginning but I’m so glad I was brave enough to take that step.
Belgium is a great place to earn money and have security, but for me that’s not what life is about. I want to enjoy every single day, go to the beach do what I love and if life was so predictable it wouldn’t be an adventure… The weather is amazing, people are so much more open-minded and I feel free as a bird. I have lovely friends, an amazing job, a great place to live near the beach and I even found love… Yes I miss my Belgian friends and family but they are only a flight away.
